I think and there has been evidence to support it…

…that some of the mental patients in hospitals during the time of the war were released to fight in the war probably because of the lack of funds to care for them.   Many were released from British prisons and sent off the US and Australia for the same reasons.

Joseph Montier Hall, married to Julia Selby who operated the old post office in Middleton, NC, was considered mentally ill most of his life, one flew east, one flew west, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest.   There were three of them and they were brothers, Joe, Barlett and William.
