He described techniques, much like defense mechanisms, that provide tools for people to use in order to reduce social anxiety.  Selective Inattention is one such mechanism.

Or avoidance of an issue.   Some people take offense to not being noticed.

Cher, the Native American Indian in early America or the Native African, might be not just a personification but the object of projections of one’s early childhood, as the result of the strict social mores of one’s community that one could only exhibit when one was intoxicated.  I think this would likely be an unconscious process unless one was in touch with one’s childhood.  If one was traumatized, then one would likely project or split off the memories of the trauma that was also part of the childhood.
