and makes him less culpable.  Had he been a writer or historian the murders may have never happened.   As it was it seems he had no conscious knowledge of who he was possessed of.  If the idea of possession did arise during this time, it might well have given rise to much paranoia about being possessed which my mother in particular seemed to be plagued with during the time of our incidents.

Deeming contended that a venereal disease he had contracted during his many voyages had caused him to have epileptic seizures and brain disease which caused him to kill. In court, he angrily stated to the jury that the press had already unfairly sealed his fate. Later, he stated that those present in the courtroom were "the ugliest race of people I've ever seen."
